Since 1990, the world's
leading central bankers have granted exclusive on-the-record interviews
to Central Banking journal. For the first time, Governors on the
Record combines these into a single volume. Together, the thirty
three interviews show how the leading protagonists understood and
influenced capital market developments for over a decade.
- THE
EURO: While Europe's leading central bankers designed the Eurosystem,
many (such as Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, Jean-Claude Trichet, Christian
Noyer and Ernst Welteke ) confided their hopes for the new currency
to Central Banking. The SNB's Hans Meyer, on the other hand, proved
prescient in his skepticism.
- FINANCIAL
INSTABILITY: Increasingly central bankers act as fire-fighters
in financial crises. William McDonough from the Fed, Hong Kong's
Joseph Yam, and ex-IMF chief, Johannes Witteveen, each discussed
the central bank's critical role in crisis management.
-
STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE: Central bank independence was hard
won. Key figures such as Sir Eddie George, Donald Brash from the
Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Chris Stals from South Africa,
talked to the journal about developments in central bank autonomy.
-
EASTERN EUROPE'S TRANSITION: economies experienced momentous upheavals
over the decade. Interviews with Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Poland's
long-serving central bank governor, Marko Skreb, governor of Croatia's
national bank, and Marian Jusko from Slovakia, bring these struggles
to life. Also included is a rare 1996 interview with Sergei Dubinin,
then governor of the Russian central bank.
-
In addition, many of the leading international financial statesman
of the period discuss their concerns for the future. They include
Paul Volker, Fed chairman for over a decade, Erik Hoffmeyer, for
thirty years governor of the Danmarks Nationalbank and Jacob Frenkel,
the influential governor of the Bank of Israel.
